Chennai: The Police officers in Tamil Nadu are being retrained in the use of firearms due to the rising crime situation. Despite prior training, many officers had forgotten how to use their firearms because they had not encountered situations requiring them to draw their weapons from their waistbands. Senior police officials are addressing this issue through comprehensive retraining efforts.

Clashes between police and rowdies have increased in recent years, with two goons shot dead in encounters this month.

All personnel, from constables to sub-inspectors, will undergo comprehensive firearm training during duty hours.

Additionally, officers are being trained in lathi handling and are authorized to use firearms as needed. A senior police official emphasized that the training will cover not only shooting skills but also tactics for returning fire when required.
