A Bengaluru-based Reddit user has claimed that he and his flatmate were fined ₹5,000 by their residential society for allowing “girls (to stay) overnight” at their flat. Sharing a screenshot of the invoice, the man questioned whether any legal remedy was available to challenge the society’s action.

According to his post, the housing society enforces a rule that bars bachelors from hosting overnight guests, while families face no such restrictions.
“Basically our society has a rule that bachelors are not allowed to have guests overnight but no restriction for family. We pay the same maintenance and everything,” he wrote.
The invoice, dated November 1, imposed the ₹5,000 penalty for the alleged infraction. It even specified the date,October 31, and the number of people involved.
“Two girls stayed overnight,” the comment on the invoice stated.
The Reddit user said this was the first instance of such an issue and expressed frustration that no prior warning was issued. He also questioned the discriminatory nature of the rule.
“This is like the first violation and I didn't even get a warning. I know it's too small of an issue but it doesn't feel nice to be treated inferiorly. Even though there is no big legal action I can take, can I do anything meaningful so that they will reconsider this?” he asked.
The post sparked wide discussion on the platform. Several users agreed that while legal action against the society was possible, it may not be worth the effort. Others advised him to consider moving out or publicly naming the society to caution other bachelors.
A user wrote, “You have two choices. Refuse to pay this amount, reply with legal notice, do not pay any dues, let them evict you - after you consume your security deposit by staying x months there. If they try to pull underhanded tactics like removing you from gate entry app, file a criminal complaint for theft.”
Meanwhile, another user shared a similar experience, saying, “They tried this in my apartment. Idea was floated. When I raised a hue and cry people were like why are you shouting, you're not a bachelor. It's better for the society, etc etc. Anyway bunch of us made so much halla they couldn't pass it in the committee.”
