Sivakasi (Virudhunagar): A 70-year-old woman thwarted a robbery attempt with remarkable presence of mind, using a pot of water to fend off a masked assailant at her home in Sivakasi early morning. CCTV footage of the incident has since gone viral, drawing widespread praise for the senior citizen’s bravery.

The incident took place around 5 am at Palaniandavarpuram Colony, Sivakasi. The woman, identified as Maheswari, was sweeping and sprinkling water in front of her house as part of her daily routine when a young man arrived on a bicycle. According to police, the suspect, wearing a face mask, noticed that she was alone and wearing gold jewellery and began watching her movements.

After Maheswari finished her chores and stepped inside her house, the man allegedly followed her and suddenly covered her eyes from behind. He then attempted to snatch her gold chain and earrings.

Startled, Maheswari screamed for help and, in a swift act of self-defence, grabbed a nearby pot of water and splashed it into the attacker’s face. The sudden move appeared to panic the robber, who reportedly loosened his grip, possibly fearing the liquid was a chemical substance.

Taking advantage of the moment, Maheswari broke free and ran further inside her home while raising an alarm. Fearing that neighbours would rush to the spot, the masked robber fled the scene on his bicycle.

The entire incident was captured by a CCTV camera installed on the street near Maheswari’s residence. The footage shows the suspect loitering in the area, entering the house and fleeing moments later after being doused with water.

The Sivakasi East Police have registered a case based on Maheswari’s complaint and launched a search for the unidentified suspect. Police officials said they are closely examining the CCTV footage to identify and trace the robber. They also commended Maheswari for her calm and courageous response, which prevented a serious crime and ensured her safety.
