Mumbai: Shiv Sena workers vandalised a hotel in Mumbai's Khar area on Sunday after a video of stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra's show, where he made a "gaddar" (traitor) jibe at Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde was filmed, according to police.
The incident took place at Hotel Unicontinental, where Kamra's performance was filmed. Shiv Sena workers demanded that an FIR be registered against the comedian, a police official reported.
The controversy erupted after a clip of Kamra's performance criticising Shinde circulated on social media. The video was shared on X by Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut with the caption, "Kunal Ka Kamal."
During the show, Kamra mocked Shinde using a modified version of a popular Hindi song from the movie Dil To Pagal Hai, evoking laughter from the audience.
Sena MP Naresh Mhaske warned Kamra that he would be chased by Sena workers throughout the country. “You will be forced to flee India,” he said in a video message.
Mhaske also described Kamra as a "contract comedian" and suggested he had made a mistake by "stepping on the tail of a snake" — an apparent reference to Shinde. He cautioned, "Once the fangs are out, there will be dire consequences."
Accusing Kamra of accepting money from Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray to target Shinde, Mhaske criticised the comedian for his remarks.
Shiv Sena MLA Murji Patel said he would show "Kamra his level" and asked him to apologise.
In response to the vandalism, Sena (UBT) MLA Aaditya Thackeray condemned the act, labelling it a "cowardly" response. In a post on X, he remarked, “Mindhe's coward gang breaks the comedy show stage where comedian @kunalkamra88 put out a song on eknath mindhe, which was 100 per cent true. Only an insecure coward would react to a song by someone.”
“By the way, law and order in the state? Another attempt to undermine the CM and Home Minister by Eknath Mindhe,” he said.
