Sharmistha Panoli, a Pune-based law student, was produced in a court in Alipore on Saturday and remanded in judicial custody until 13 June. Her arrest by Kolkata Police took place in Gurugram on Friday night.

Instagram video at the centre of controversy

The arrest stemmed from a now-deleted Instagram video in which Panoli allegedly made offensive remarks linked to Operation Sindoor and a particular religion. The video has sparked online debate and support for the student.

Complaint filed in Kolkata

According to the FIR, police received a complaint on May 14 at the Garden Reach police station from one Wajahat Khan. The investigation that followed led to Panoli’s location being traced to Gurugram, where she was detained.

Social media support intensifies

A wave of public support has erupted across social media platforms for Panoli, with many questioning the limits of free speech and the handling of such cases by law enforcement agencies.
