Mumbai: Days after losing a majority of its Lok Sabha MPs to the ruling Shiv Sena, the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) has been hit by another political setback, with senior leader Sachin Ahir emerging as the candidate of the Eknath Shinde faction for the post of Deputy Chairman of the Maharashtra Legislative Council.

The development has triggered fresh speculation over the strength of Shiv Sena (UBT)'s organisation, particularly in Mumbai, where Ahir has long been considered an influential leader and a close associate of Aaditya Thackeray.

Ahir filed his nomination on Tuesday as the nominee of the ruling Mahayuti alliance. His candidature was submitted in the presence of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar.

The surprise nomination comes less than a week after six of Shiv Sena (UBT)'s nine Lok Sabha MPs switched allegiance to the Shinde-led Shiv Sena, intensifying concerns within the opposition camp over a series of defections.

For the Deputy Chairman's election, the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) has fielded Legislative Council member Jagannath Abhyankar. Leader of Opposition in the Council Ambadas Danve confirmed Abhyankar's candidature.

Leaders from the ruling alliance projected Ahir's selection as a recognition of his legislative experience and political standing. Maharashtra minister and Shiv Sena leader Uday Samant said, “Sachin Ahir is a senior MLC and he has raised his voice for the people of Mumbai. I am happy that such an experienced leader is coming with the Shiv Sena. We have checked all the legal side, and then this decision was taken.”

The move is likely to be viewed as a symbolic victory for the Shinde camp, which has steadily expanded its influence since the split in the Shiv Sena and continues to target leaders associated with the Uddhav Thackeray faction.

Party MLA Sunil Raut said the organisation had overcome several political challenges in the past and remained resilient despite repeated setbacks. According to him, the latest development would not weaken the party's foundation.
