Imphal/New Delhi: Noted theatre personality Ratan Thiyam, a towering figure in Indian performing arts and a pioneer of the “theatre of roots” movement, passed away on Tuesday. He was 77.

According to media reports, Thiyam breathed his last on Wednesday morning. Widely respected for his deep contributions to Indian theatre, Thiyam's work seamlessly blended ancient Indian theatrical traditions with modern themes, creating a unique and powerful performance language.

Born on January 20, 1948, Thiyam was also known as Thiyam Nemai. He was a multi-faceted artist, playwright, director, painter, and musician, whose influence extended far beyond Manipur, his home state.

He rose to national prominence in the 1970s as one of the key figures in the theatre of the roots movement, which sought to ground contemporary Indian theatre in indigenous cultural and aesthetic traditions.

In 1987, he was honoured with the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, one of the highest recognitions for performing artists in India.
