Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and his five friends, former CJI Ranjan Gogoi’s staff, former election commissioner Ashok Lavasa and union ministers Ashwini Vaishnaw and Prahlad Patel appear on the list of “potential spyware target,” reports ‘The Wire’.

The leak, part of the Pegasus project taken up by 16 media houses across the world, was released on Monday evening.

Election strategist Prashant Kishore, Mamata Banerjee’s nephew Abhishek Banerjee, former Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje’s personal secretary, former Vishva Hindu Parishad leader Pravin Togadia too appear on the list.

Gogoi’s staff were snooped following the sexual harassement complaint against him. Lavasa’s phone was surveilled soon after he flagged PM Narendra Modi during the 2019 Lok Sabha election campaign for code violations. Rahul Gandhi was put under surveillance when he was the Congress president, the report claims.

The snooping was done through Pegasus, an Israeli spyware. It is sold only to “vetted governments,” the company claim. However, they did not confirm if it is sold to Government of India, reports ‘The Wire’.
