Pune: Six people were killed and more than ten injured in a devastating accident on the Mumbai–Bengaluru Highway near Pune’s Navale Bridge on Thursday evening. According to police, a car was trapped and crushed between two heavy container trucks that subsequently burst into flames, engulfing all three vehicles.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Sambhaji Kadam said the collision occurred when one of the trucks, reportedly travelling towards Mumbai, lost control due to a suspected brake failure and rammed into another truck ahead of it. The car between them was completely destroyed.
Firefighters and rescue teams rushed to the scene to douse the flames and recover the victims. City Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar confirmed that the fire broke out due to the impact of the collision.
The injured were taken to nearby hospitals, while authorities suspended traffic on the Bengaluru-bound lane of the highway to clear the wreckage.
Pune witnessed a horrifying road tragedy on Thursday evening when a car was crushed between two container trucks that caught fire on Navale Bridge, along the Mumbai–Bengaluru Highway. Police confirmed that six people were killed and over ten others sustained injuries in the accident.
According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 1) Sambhaji Kadam, the incident occurred when a heavy truck heading towards Mumbai lost control, reportedly due to a brake failure, and rammed into another large truck moving ahead. “A car travelling between these two trucks was crushed in the impact,” Kadam said.
The collision sparked a massive fire that engulfed both trucks and the car. “Six persons died in the accident, and more than ten others were injured,” Kadam added. Rescue teams are continuing efforts to recover the bodies from the mangled wreckage, while the injured have been taken to local hospitals.
Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar, who visited the accident site, said the fire was triggered by the force of the collision. Videos circulating on social media show a car trapped between the burning vehicles as thick black smoke billowed from the scene.
Traffic on the Bengaluru-Mumbai lane of the highway was temporarily halted as emergency services worked to remove the charred vehicles and restore movement. The incident has raised renewed concerns about vehicle safety and speed regulation on the busy highway.
