Patna: Jan Suraaj Party founder Prashant Kishor interpreted his commanding lead in the Bankipur by-election, long considered a safe seat for the BJP, as a clear message from Bihar's electorate to the party's central leadership, signalling that voters are rejecting candidates with problematic backgrounds in favour of development-driven governance rather than merely deciding a single assembly contest.

Kishor extended his lead in the Bankipur constituency, with updated figures from the Election Commission of India placing him ahead by roughly 18,953 votes. According to ECI data, after 30 rounds of counting, Kishor has secured 63,203 votes, outstripping BJP nominee Neeraj Kumar, who stands at 44,250 votes. Rashtriya Janata Dal candidate Rekha Kumari occupies third position with 14,085 votes.

"This is the victory of the people of Bankipur. As we stated during the election campaign, this was not just an election to choose an MLA. It was an attempt by the people of Bihar to send a message to the BJP's central leadership that they should appoint a good person as the Chief Minister of Bihar. They do not want a person with a criminal background or questionable conduct, character, or reputation to lead Bihar. They want a good Chief Minister who can improve education, create employment opportunities for the youth, and ensure that the children of Bihar do not have to migrate elsewhere for work," Kishor informed reporters.

The Jan Suraaj leader additionally urged the BJP's national leadership to prioritise governance ahead of forthcoming parliamentary ballots, noting, "Before the Lok Sabha elections, Prime Minister Modi, the BJP, and Amit Shah should focus on improving Bihar, creating jobs for its youth, and stopping migration. That is our only objective. We do not want to become MLAs merely to award contracts. Our sole objective is the development of Bihar."

Kishor's comments coincided with ongoing celebrations among party supporters in Patna. The Bankipur assembly segment, formerly designated as Patna West, is no ordinary constituency, having functioned as an impregnable BJP stronghold since 1995. For over three decades, the seat operated effectively as a political domain for a single family: initially championed by BJP figure Navin Kishore Prasad Sinha, and subsequently retained across five consecutive terms by his son, Nitin Nabin.

The vacancy arose when Nabin, acting as the BJP National President, relinquished his legislative seat following his elevation to the Rajya Sabha. During the 2025 Bihar assembly elections, Nabin secured Bankipur by a margin exceeding 50,000 votes. For Kishor to dismantle this political legacy directly within its home turf delivers a substantial setback to the ruling party's standing.

Having spent years operating as a prominent electoral strategist for rival political formations, Kishor established the Jan Suraaj movement to foster an alternative political platform centred on grassroots concerns, educational reform, and employment generation. Capturing a prominent urban constituency during his maiden electoral campaign offers significant validation for the party, positioning it as a formidable challenger to both the NDA and the Mahagathbandhan.
