New Delhi: The Luv Kush Ramleela Committee has confirmed that actor Poonam Pandey will no longer be seen as Mandodari, wife of Ravana, in this year’s staging of the iconic Ramleela. The decision comes after opposition from several groups.

Why was the decision changed?

At a press meet held at the Constitutional Club of India, committee president Arjun Kumar explained the move.

“An artist should be judged by their work and not their past; the decision was reviewed in light of public sentiment,” he said.

He added, “Every woman has a role to play in society and should not be humiliated. Initially, we believed Poonam Pandey could positively portray Mandodari. But considering the uproar among certain sections, we had to reconsider.”

What does the committee say about Poonam Pandey?

The president emphasised that the committee respects Pandey as an artist but confirmed that another actor will now take on the role.

“Our objective is to spread the message of Lord Ram and harmony in society. We do not want any controversy to overshadow the event,” Kumar said.

In a letter addressed to Pandey, the committee stated the step was not meant as an insult but as a measure to preserve the ideals of Lord Ram.

What was Poonam Pandey’s response earlier?

Before the decision was announced, Poonam Pandey had shared a video expressing her happiness about being chosen for the part.

“I am getting an opportunity to play the role of Mandodari. I am very excited, very happy.

“I have also decided that, since Navratri starts tomorrow, I am planning to fast for 9 days, so that my body and mind remain more cleansed, and I can play this beautiful character well. Jai Shri Ram,” she said in the clip.”

The Luv Kush Ramleela is one of Delhi’s most well-known stage celebrations of the Ramayana. Held every year at the Red Fort, it attracts thousands of visitors and has often featured big names from film and television.
