New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi reaffirmed the government's commitment to empowering the girl child on Friday, emphasising the importance of providing a wide array of opportunities for her. He highlighted that the achievements of girls continue to inspire the nation.
In his message on National Girl Child Day, shared on X, the Prime Minister stated, "Today, on National Girl Child Day, we reiterate our commitment to keep empowering the girl child and ensure a wide range of opportunities for her. India is proud of the accomplishments of the girl child across all fields. Their feats continue to inspire us all.”
PM Modi added that the government’s efforts are focused on key sectors such as education, technology, skills, and healthcare, which have all contributed to empowering the girl child. "We are equally resolute in ensuring no discrimination happens against the girl child," PM Modi further said in the post.
National Girl Child Day, observed annually on January 24, is an important occasion to highlight the rights, education, and welfare of girls.
Established in 2008 by the Union Ministry of Women and Child Development, the day aims to raise awareness about empowering girls and creating a society where they can thrive without gender-based barriers.
A government press release stated that National Girl Child Day provides an opportunity to focus on girls' rights and ensure they are given equal opportunities, free from gender biases. The day also seeks to highlight the inequalities girls face and promote education while encouraging society to value and respect them as equals.
The release further noted that a major objective is to change societal attitudes toward girls, address issues like female foeticide, raise awareness about the declining sex ratio, and foster an inclusive environment for girls.
In 2015, the Modi government launched its flagship initiative, 'Beti Bachao Beti Padhao' (Save Daughters, Educate Daughters), aimed at improving the child sex ratio and empowering girls through a range of measures.
