Stand-up comedian Pulkit Mani announced on Sunday via Instagram that his scheduled performances across Uttar Pradesh, specifically in Noida, Lucknow and Kanpur, have been called off. The decision follows a political row triggered by his mimicry of Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the 'Chhatron Ki Goonj' event hosted by Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, in Indore, Madhya Pradesh.

Addressing his audience in an initial social media post, Mani stated, “I regret to inform you that my Noida show has been cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances. I sincerely apologise for the inconvenience caused and appreciate you understanding and support.”
In a subsequent Instagram update, the comedian cited safety concerns, stating, “Due to repeated threats from goon activists my Lucknow and Kanpur shows are cancelled.”

Origins of the controversy

The row stems from a video clip shared on X by the Congress party, featuring Mani mimicking PM Modi alongside Gandhi on stage during Saturday's event in Indore.
 

In the viral snippet, Mani entered the stage laughing and embraced Gandhi, asking, “My friend. How are you?”

Gandhi responded, “I'm fine; how are you, Modi ji?” before adding, “Very nice to meet you,” and encouraging Mani to “tell me more”.

Gesturing toward the audience, the comedian quipped, “Maa ko kursi do, maa (Give Mother a chair, Mother)”.
