New Delhi: The BJP launched a sharp attack on the Congress over the new “About This Account” feature introduced on X, alleging that several Congress-linked handles are operating from foreign locations.

The criticism came after X rolled out a feature that reveals the country where an account is based.

BJP MP Sambit Patra cited the platform’s new location-tagging tool to claim that multiple Congress and Left-leaning social media accounts were operating from outside India.

“There is a new feature on ‘X’ that one can see which country an account is located in... Pawan Khera's account is based in the United States... Maharashtra Congress's account is based in Ireland. Although now they have changed it to India... Himachal Congress's account is connected via Thailand Android app,” he said.

Patra further alleged, “Accounts related to several influencers are based abroad. Prateek Sinha: Malaysia, Alt News: United States, the Caravan India: United States. There are several such accounts of Left and Congress influencers... whose accounts are based in Pakistan, Bangladesh... Rahul Gandhi not only speaks against India abroad or tries to create anarchy in the country with the help of Gen Z, but he has also delegated this task, with planning and design, to people sitting abroad.”

His remarks came against the backdrop of global scrutiny after X introduced the feature, which showed several high-reach political accounts worldwide, including many supporting the MAGA movement in the U.S., were operating from overseas.

Elon Musk’s platform had on Saturday unveiled the “About This Account” tool, enabling users to view the country or region where an account is based by clicking on the signup date on the profile.

Nikita Bier, X’s head of product, said, “This is an important first step to securing the integrity of the global town square. We plan to provide many more ways for users to verify the authenticity of the content they see on X.”
