Pahalgam: A terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, claimed the life of a businessman from Karnataka’s Shivamogga district on Tuesday, sparking outrage and grief across the country. The victim, identified as Manjunath Rao, was among several tourists targeted when terrorists opened fire in the popular tourist destination, leaving multiple people feared dead and at least 20 injured.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah confirmed the presence of Kannadigas among the victims and announced immediate action from the state government. Expressing deep sorrow over Rao’s death, Siddaramaiah said the government is committed to supporting the families affected and ensuring the safe return of all others from Karnataka currently in Jammu and Kashmir.

“I strongly condemn the heinous terror attack on tourists in Pahalgam, J&K. Kannadigas are among the victims of this shocking incident,” the Chief Minister posted on X.

“Upon receiving the news, I convened an emergency meeting and reviewed the situation with the Chief Secretary and senior police officials.”

Two official teams, one comprising senior officers and another of police personnel, have been dispatched to J&K to coordinate with local authorities and provide assistance. Additionally, an adventure team from the Sports Department, led by Commissioner Chethan, has also been sent to the Union Territory.

“All necessary support will be extended. Please be assured, the Government of Karnataka stands firmly with those affected,” Siddaramaiah added.

The attack, which occurred on a peaceful Tuesday afternoon in the scenic meadows of Pahalgam, shattered the calm as families and tourists enjoyed their vacations. The brazen act has triggered widespread condemnation from across the political spectrum.

The identity of other victims is still being verified, and the exact number of casualties is yet to be officially confirmed. However, officials indicated that several of the injured are from outside the state, including Karnataka.

Security has been tightened across tourist zones in Kashmir, and an investigation is underway to identify and apprehend the perpetrators.
