The nine sacred days of Shardiya Navratri are considered highly auspicious in Hindu tradition. Each day is dedicated to a different form of Goddess Durga, and devotees celebrate with deep devotion, rituals, and spiritual practices.

This year, Shardiya Navratri began on September 22, 2025, and the second day (Dwitiya Tithi of Shukla Paksha in Ashwina month) falls on September 23, 2025. On this day, worshippers honor Maa Brahmacharini, the second form of Goddess Durga.

Significance of Day 2

Maa Brahmacharini, also revered as Devi Yogini and Devi Tapasvini, is known as the Goddess of Penance. She symbolizes patience, devotion, and spiritual strength. Depicted in a serene white saree, she carries a rosary (japa mala) in her right hand and a kamandal in her left.

Devotees believe that worshipping Maa Brahmacharini bestows wisdom, inner strength, and discipline. Scriptures also state that she rules planet Mars and governs the Sacral Chakra. Her blessings are said to help devotees overcome obstacles like Mangal Dosha in their horoscopes.

Associated Colour & Offering

On this day, Maa Brahmacharini is associated with the color red. Devotees traditionally offer hibiscus flowers, along with mogra, kumkum, and white sweets, as part of the puja.

The Legend of Maa Brahmacharini

According to Hindu mythology, Goddess Parvati took birth as Brahmacharini, the daughter of King Himavan (Himalaya). To attain Lord Shiva as her consort, she undertook severe penance for thousands of years.

For the first thousand years, she lived only on fruits and flowers. The next thousand years, she survived on herbs. Later, she consumed only Bilva leaves for another thousand years.

Eventually, she renounced even food and water, continuing her tapasya with unmatched devotion. Impressed by her unwavering austerity, the gods and sages blessed her and gave her the name “Aparna.” Eventually, her devotion led to her union with Lord Shiva.
