Madurai, Tamil Nadu: The recently held Murugan Devotees' Conference in Madurai has stirred significant political debate across Tamil Nadu, blending faith, culture, and politics in a high-profile event that drew over five lakh participants. Organized by Hindu Munnani, a group affiliated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), the spiritual gathering is being viewed by many as a politically symbolic moment just months ahead of the state assembly elections.
Prominent BJP leaders, including Tamil Nadu BJP President Nainar Nagendran and former state chief K. Annamalai, were present at the June 22nd event, which showcased Tamil Nadu's ancient spiritual traditions and emphasised the role of Sanatana Dharma in Tamil identity.
While organisers maintained that the event was purely devotional in nature, the public participation of political figures and alleged political messaging during the conference have sparked controversy. The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court had laid down 52 conditions for the event, specifically directing organisers to avoid political or inflammatory religious speeches.
Despite these directives, political statements were reportedly made, prompting public criticism and legal scrutiny. A video presentation highlighting Tamil Nadu’s spiritual heritage was seen by some observers as reinforcing ideological narratives aligned with the BJP’s cultural positioning.
Following the event, the Tamil Nadu BJP has accused the ruling DMK government of stifling religious expression, calling the state’s response a “silent emergency.” Police cases have been filed against several leaders including Nainar Nagendran, K. Annamalai, and Hindu Munnani’s Kadeswara Subramanian for alleged violations during the conference.
BJP spokesperson A.N.S. Prasad condemned the move, questioning the basis for the FIRs. “The gathering was peaceful, well-organized, and devotional in nature. The state’s actions are politically motivated,” he said.
