Mumbai: Two people, including an eight-year-old girl, died and four others were injured after an electrocution incident near a Ganapati festival pandal in Mumbai's Lalbaug early Sunday, officials said.

The incident occurred around 2:20 am near the entrance of the Kalachowki Vibhag Sarvajanik Utsav Mandal on Dattaram Lad Marg in Kalachowki, as large crowds gathered in the area for the ongoing Ganapati festival.

The Mumbai Fire Brigade received information about the incident at 2:42 am, following which fire brigade personnel, police, Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) officials and civic ward staff reached the spot.

Electric current reported at temporary water stall

According to civic officials, the electric shock was reported at a temporary drinking water stall near the entrance of the festival mandal.

The electricity supply was switched off and the area was cordoned off as a precaution.

BEST officials later inspected the site at Digvijay Mill Chawl, where a temporary meter had been installed for festival illumination and a cold drink stall.

The temporary meter wiring and miniature circuit breaker had already been disconnected by a local electrician when the BEST team conducted its inspection. Power to the site remained switched off.

Woman dies, 12-year-old critical after electrocution

The injured were taken to Masina Hospital in Byculla and Global Hospital in Parel.

At Masina Hospital, eight-year-old Raghini Ghanshyam Yadav was declared dead on arrival.

Kiran Akbar Naik, 19, Tanvi Naresh Hande, 19, and Sahil Sandip Tare, 19, were admitted for treatment and reported to be stable.

At Global Hospital, 33-year-old Sujata was declared dead. Twelve-year-old Ruhi Singh was admitted to the intensive care unit and was reported to be in critical condition.

Police probe underway

The incident occurred amid heavy crowds in Lalbaug for the Ganapati festival.

Kalachowki Police are investigating the circumstances that led to the electrocution. Further details, including the cause of the electrical leakage, are awaited.
