In preparation for the upcoming monsoon season, Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) will halt all flight operations for six hours on May 9, 2025, to conduct its annual pre-monsoon runway maintenance. The suspension will be in effect from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm, impacting both the primary runway 09/27 and the secondary runway 14/32.​

Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL), the airport operator, has issued a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) to inform airlines and stakeholders well in advance, allowing them to adjust flight schedules accordingly. This proactive measure aims to minimize passenger inconvenience and ensure safety during the monsoon months.​ 

The maintenance work will involve thorough inspections and necessary repairs of the runway surfaces, including checks for wear and tear, and assessments of the runway's micro and macro texture. Such activities are crucial to maintain the structural integrity of the runways, especially considering the heavy rainfall Mumbai experiences during the monsoon season.​ 

CSMIA spans approximately 1,033 acres and handles around 950 flight movements daily. The primary runway 09/27 measures 3,448 meters in length and 60 meters in width, while the secondary runway 14/32 is 2,871 meters long and 45 meters wide. These dimensions accommodate a wide range of aircraft, making the maintenance work essential for continued safe operations.​ 

Passengers planning to travel on May 9 are advised to check with their respective airlines for any changes in flight schedules. Normal operations are expected to resume promptly after the maintenance window concludes at 5:00 pm.
