Sangamner, located in the Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra, has been a Congress stronghold for the past four decades. As the 2024 Maharashtra Assembly elections approach, Congress veteran Balasaheb Thorat is seeking re-election for the ninth time. However, local issues and competition from new candidates could present significant challenges for his continued dominance in the region.

Balasaheb Thorat

Balasaheb Thorat has been a prominent figure in Sangamner for over 25 years, with many residents considering him a reliable leader who has worked extensively for their welfare. Thorat, a senior Congress leader, is widely seen as a candidate who can become Chief Minister if Congress forms the government in Maharashtra.

Many voters feel that Thorat will win due to his long-standing presence and track record of addressing local issues. However, concerns persist over unresolved problems, such as the effectiveness of government schemes like the Ladki Bai and Annapurna initiatives. While some locals feel that these programs have been beneficial, others argue that the benefits have not reached all sections of society or are not effective enough.

The rising challenge from Shiv Sena’s Amol Khatal

This year, Thorat faces a formidable challenge from Amol Khatal of the Shiv Sena. Khatal, a relatively new face in the constituency, aims to disrupt Thorat’s dominance. While Thorat has a strong legacy, Khatal’s entry into the race adds a new dimension to the election, making it more competitive than before.

Other candidates in the race

A total of 13 candidates are contesting the Sangamner seat in the 2024 Maharashtra Assembly elections. In addition to Balasaheb Thorat (Congress) and Amol Khatal (Shiv Sena), the race includes Yogesh Manohar Suryavanshi from the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena, Pradeep Vitthal Ghule from the Lokshahi Party, and Kaliram Bahiru Popalghat from the Bhartiya Navjawan Sena.
