Chennai: The Madras High Court has issued a notice regarding a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking an investigation into the background and nationality of journalist and Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) spokesperson Saurav Das. Filed by petitioner Ganesh Kumar, the plea also calls for a complete block of Das's social media accounts over alleged derogatory comments made against the judiciary, including sitting judges of the Supreme Court of India. During the preliminary hearing, the petitioner's counsel, advocate B. Jagannath, presented documents annexed to the petition concerning Das’s identity, background, and registered addresses, alleging that he operates under the alias 'Yogesh Sharma'.

Demands for Inquiry into Identity, Passport, and Aadhaar

According to legal reports published by Bar and Bench, the PIL petitions statutory authorities to take immediate administrative and legal action against Das. The petitioner highlighted a formal representation submitted on October 7, 2026, urging the court to direct relevant government departments, including passport and statutory authorities, to conduct a thorough probe into his citizenship credentials. Among the prayers submitted before the bench, the petition explicitly seeks directions to cancel Das's passport and Aadhaar card, alongside an order instructing digital platforms to restrict his social media profiles to prevent the further dissemination of content deemed damaging to the dignity of the courts.

Broader Legal Troubles and Ongoing Proceedings

The petition before the Madras High Court marks the latest in a series of legal challenges facing the CJP spokesperson. Das was recently taken into preventive custody alongside associate Ashutosh Ranka by the Delhi Police after they climbed a locked iron gate to enter Jantar Mantar, which had been de-notified as a protest venue, where they unfurled the national flag and raised slogans demanding electoral reforms and the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. This led to temporary judicial custody before a Delhi court ordered their release. By issuing a notice on the PIL, the Madras High Court has initiated formal judicial review on the matter, seeking responses from the designated state and central statutory respondents within a specified timeframe.
