In a first-of-its-kind initiative on Indian Railways, Central Railway (CR) launched the Lucky Yatri Yojana on March 20 to incentivise Mumbai’s daily local train passengers. Under the scheme, a commuter with a valid ticket or season pass could win a daily cash prize of Rs 10,000, along with a weekly bumper reward of Rs 50,000.

The objective was to reward honest, regular travellers and discourage ticketless travel. A ticket checker was to randomly select one commuter each day at any station, verify their ticket or pass, and hand over the cash prize on the spot.

Additionally, commuters had the option to check if their Unreserved Ticketing System (UTS) ticket was a winner by logging on to www.luckyyatra.com, uploading ticket details, and completing OTP verification.

The campaign, sponsored by FCB Interface Communication Pvt Ltd, did not impose any cost on commuters. CR, which carries nearly 40 lakh passengers daily, aimed to add a sense of excitement to daily train journeys through this scheme.

Poor visibility hinders campaign success

More than a week into the initiative, no passenger had claimed the daily Rs 10,000 prize or the weekly Rs 50,000 reward. CR officials admitted that many commuters were unaware of the scheme or its procedure.

Some passengers said they had only heard about the offer through friends and initially doubted its authenticity. In response, CR is believed to have launched additional publicity measures to raise awareness.

Despite CR’s efforts to ease ticketing through mobile apps and vending machines, around 20% of passengers are still estimated to travel without a ticket. Ticket-checking drives reportedly catch 4,000 to 5,000 such offenders daily.

Innovation welcomed, but outcome uncertain

The eight-week campaign is scheduled to conclude by the second week of May. So far, no official data or success stories have emerged in the media. The scheme marked a novel attempt at addressing ticketless travel by combining technology, private sponsorship, and behavioural nudges.

Whether it sets a precedent for future such initiatives remains to be seen and will largely depend on the campaign’s results in the coming weeks.
