Silli constituency, located in Ranchi district, will be among the seats to vote in the second phase of the Jharkhand Assembly elections on Wednesday. Known for its mix of urban and rural voters, it is expected to witness a competitive election with key issues such as development, employment, and industrial growth playing a crucial role in shaping the outcome.
A diverse constituency: Urban, rural, and industrial significance
Silli is a unique constituency that blends urban and rural elements. While Silli town acts as a significant urban hub, the area is also known for its coal mines and rich natural resources, adding economic weight to the region. These factors, combined with the constituency’s development needs, make it a focal point of political campaigns.
Political contest: Key parties and candidates in the fray
The Silli constituency will have 278 polling booths, as confirmed by the state’s Chief Election Commissioner (CEO). The political landscape in Silli is marked by the presence of several major parties, including the All Jharkhand Students Union (AJSU), Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Congress, and Jharkhand Vikas Morcha (Prajatantrik). Sudesh Kumar Mahato of AJSU, who has served as the incumbent representative of Hazaribagh since 2019, will contest from his traditional seat in Silli. Devendra Nath Mahto of the Jharkhand Loktantrik Krantikari Morcha (JKLM) will also be a key contender.
Hemant Soren’s rally: A strong message to the opposition
Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren addressed a rally in Silli, criticising the BJP and NDA. "This son and brother of yours took up your burden on his shoulders. BJP and NDA should tell what they did in 20 years besides looting Jharkhand," Soren stated, rallying support for his government’s efforts to bring development to the region.
Voting and turnout in 2019: A glimpse of the past election
In the 2019 Jharkhand Assembly elections, Sudesh Kumar Mahato won the Silli seat with a margin of 20,195 votes. The constituency saw a voter turnout of 79.3%, with 1,57,646 votes cast out of 1,98,798 registered voters. The upcoming election is expected to draw significant attention, as the competition between candidates intensifies.
