Infosys has let go of 240 trainees who were unable to clear the company’s internal evaluation process, despite being given multiple opportunities. As reported by the Times of India (TOI), the decision was conveyed through internal emails on April 18, following the trainees' failure to meet the required standards of the company’s ‘Generic Foundation Training Program’.

The report mentions that trainees were offered extended preparation time, doubt-clearing sessions, and mock tests. However, even after three attempts, they could not pass.

According to TOI report, the email to employees read, "You have not met the qualifying criteria in the ‘Generic foundation training program’ despite the additional preparation time, doubt-clearing sessions, several mock assessments and three attempts. As a result, you will not be able to continue your journey for the apprenticeship program."

Infosys laid off approximately 350-400 trainees on February 7. The company stated that the terminations were due to the trainees’ failure to pass internal assessment tests after three attempts. According to Infosys, performance evaluations are a standard procedure in their training program, which is widely recognised for its quality.

However, the layoffs have sparked outrage, with NITES at the forefront of challenging the company's actions. The union has labelled the mass terminations as "illegal, unethical, and in violation of labour laws." On February 26, NITES held a press conference where several affected employees shared their personal experiences and grievances, calling for legal action against the company.

Infosys responded to the mass layoffs controversy by emphasising that their testing and evaluation processes are clearly outlined in their evaluation policy document, which is communicated to all trainees. The company clarified that performance evaluations, including negative marks in multiple-choice tests, are an integral part of their training program.
