Indian Railways has revised reservation chart preparation timings, allowing passengers to know their ticket confirmation status up to 10 hours before departure, easing last-minute uncertainty.

New Delhi: In a major passenger-friendly reform, Indian Railways has revised the timing for preparing the first reservation chart, allowing travellers to check their ticket status up to 10 hours before train departure.
The move is aimed at reducing last-minute anxiety, especially for passengers on waiting lists, and enabling smoother travel planning.
This is the first time the Railway Board has formally updated the chart preparation schedule. Until now, reservation charts were prepared only four hours before departure, often leaving passengers uncertain about confirmation status till the last moment.
What Has Changed?
Under the revised system, chart preparation will depend on the train’s departure time:
For trains departing between 5 am and 2 pm:
- The first reservation chart will now be prepared by 8:00 pm on the previous day
- For trains departing between 2:01 pm and 11:59 pm, and from 12:00 midnight to 5:00 am:
- The first reservation chart will be prepared 10 hours before departure
Railway officials said the change will provide passengers with clearer and earlier confirmation of their booking status, helping them plan accommodation, connecting journeys, or alternative travel arrangements in advance.
Why the Change Matters
According to officials from the Railway Ministry, the revision was necessary to ease last-minute stress, particularly for passengers travelling long distances or coming from remote areas to board trains.
“Preparing the chart in advance allows passengers to plan their journeys more efficiently and avoid uncertainty,” a senior official told India Today.
Implementation Across India
The Railway Board has issued instructions to all zonal railways to implement the revised chart preparation schedule with immediate effect. The move is expected to improve transparency, reduce passenger anxiety, and enhance the overall travel experience for millions of rail users across the country.
