New Delhi: A new Long-range Anti-ship Hypersonic Glide Missile, engineered by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), is set to make its public debut during India's 77th Republic Day Parade.
The advanced weapon system will be a major leap in India's indigenous missile capabilities, specifically designed to bolster the maritime strike power of the Indian Navy.
A Prasad Goud, the ASL Project Director at DRDO, highlighted the strategic edge provided by the new technology. "This missile is being developed by DRDO for the requirements of the Indian Navy. Its basic advantage is that it is hypersonic, so enemy radars cannot detect it," Goud said.
The missile features a strike range of approximately 1,500 kilometres (932 miles) and is designed to bypass sophisticated naval defences.
"Its range is about 1500 Km and can carry different payloads, then defeat the warheads on ships deployed in the ocean. It travels with hypersonic speed and high aerodynamic efficiency," Goud added.
The introduction of this hardware is expected to provide a substantial upgrade to India's regional maritime security posture. Goud further noted that the organisation's research extends beyond this specific platform, stating, "This will increase India's capability in the ocean waters... DRDO is working on hypersonic glide missile technology and hypersonic cruise missile technology..."
