Gopal Khemka’s son, Gunjan Khemka, who was also murdered six years ago, in 2018, in Hajipur by bike-borne assailant

Patna: The shocking murder of prominent Patna businessman and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Gopal Khemka late Friday night has sent ripples through Bihar, prompting a high-level police investigation and reigniting a fierce political debate over the state's law and order situation. The incident bears a chilling resemblance to the murder of his son six years ago.
Gopal Khemka was a well-known figure in Patna's business circles, owning Magadh Hospital and serving as a director of the Bankipore Club. His extensive business portfolio included petrol pumps, real estate ventures, and various factories, such as a cotton factory and carton manufacturing units. He began his journey in business with a small medical store called Aushadhi Medico. Although identified as a BJP leader, he reportedly distanced himself from active politics following his son's death in 2018. He is survived by his son, Gaurav Khemka (a doctor) and a daughter living in London, as well as three brothers involved in the pharmaceutical business.
The fatal attack occurred around 11:40 pm on Friday, July 4, 2025. Khemka was shot dead by an unidentified bike-borne assailant near his residence in the upscale Gandhi Maidan locality. Authorities have recovered one bullet and one cartridge from the crime scene, and preliminary investigations suggest he was gunned down by a lone assailant on a motorcycle.
This tragedy carries a profound resonance for the Khemka family as it tragically mirrors the fate of his son, Gunjan Khemka, who was also murdered six years ago, in 2018, in Hajipur. Gunjan, who was also a BJP leader and served as the convener of the party's Bihar Industry Cell, was shot dead in broad daylight by a bike-borne assailant. The motive behind Gunjan's killing was never fully disclosed, and while one criminal was arrested in that case, he was later killed after being released on bail, leaving that case largely unsolved.
In response to Gopal Khemka's murder, the Bihar Police have promptly formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the case. This SIT will be led by the SP City Central, as confirmed by Director General of Police (DGP) Vinay Kumar. SP (Patna Central) Diksha stated that officers and patrolling vehicles immediately reached the spot, secured the crime scene, and began evidence collection. Forensic teams arrived at the crime scene on Saturday morning to assist in the investigation. Authorities are also thoroughly examining CCTV footage from the area for clues that could lead to the culprits. As of the latest reports, no arrests have been formally confirmed in connection with Gopal Khemka's murder.
The murder has swiftly become a flashpoint for political criticism, with the opposition raising serious concerns about the state's law and order situation. Bihar Congress Spokesperson Rajesh Rathod vehemently stated that the incident has "exposed" the deteriorating law and order in Bihar.
