Congress leaders face FIR for sharing an AI-generated video allegedly defaming PM Modi and his late mother.

New Delhi: An FIR has been registered against Indian National Congress leaders for allegedly circulating an AI-generated (deepfake) video that purportedly maligns and defames Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his late mother. The video was shared through the official social media handle of INC Bihar on platform X on September 10.
The complaint was filed by Sanket Gupta, Convenor of the BJP Delhi Election Cell, who accused the Congress party of violating multiple sections of the newly enacted Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023. The FIR cites charges under sections 18(2), 336(3), 336(4), 340(2), 352, 356(2) and 61(2) related to defamation, moral violations, and the dignity of women.
According to the complaint filed at the North Avenue police station, the AI-generated video shows Prime Minister Modi dreaming about his late mother, who is depicted criticising his political decisions in poll-bound Bihar. Gupta claimed that the video tarnished the image of the Prime Minister and disrespected the dignity of his deceased mother, calling it a “gross violation of law, morality, and Women's dignity.” He demanded immediate removal of the content from the social media platform and sought legal action against the Congress party and its office bearers.
The Bihar Congress unit has defended the video, stating that it was not meant to disrespect the Prime Minister or his mother. Pawan Khera, head of Congress’ media and publicity department, said, “What is their objection? Just because a mother is trying to educate her son to do something right, where is the disrespect? This is neither disrespectful to the mother, whom we respect dearly, nor to the son."
