From Oct 1, India Post hikes Speed Post tariffs, adds OTP delivery and upgrades registered shipments to Speed Parcels for faster, secure service.

New Delhi: In a major upgrade to its premium mail service, India Post has announced a revision in Speed Post tariffs effective October 1, 2025, marking the first hike since October 2012. The move is aimed at sustaining service improvements, addressing operational costs and introducing new-age features for secure and reliable mail delivery.
Launched on August 1, 1986, Speed Post has long been one of India's most trusted and widely used postal services, offering time-bound and efficient delivery of letters and parcels. Now, as part of its modernisation efforts, India Post is introducing several new features and structural changes to strengthen Speed Post’s appeal in the age of digital transformation and rising customer expectations.
Key changes effective from October 1
1. Revised Speed Post tariff
The tariff for Speed Post documents has been rationalised after 13 years. As per Gazette Notification No. 4256 dated September 25, 2025, the new rates based on weight and distance will apply from October 1. For example, items up to 50 grams will now be charged ₹47–₹51, depending on the delivery distance, with GST applicable. (Full rate chart below.)
2. Registered shipments to become Speed Parcels
As part of operational restructuring, all Registered Parcels will now be treated as Speed Post Parcels. This move is intended to standardise services and ensure faster, more secure delivery under a single category. Speed Post will now serve as the sole premium delivery service for both documents and parcels.
New features introduced
India Post has also announced a host of new digital features designed to enhance the reliability, transparency and convenience of Speed Post:
- OTP-based secure delivery
Customers can now opt for One-Time Password (OTP) based delivery, ensuring that the item is handed over only to the intended addressee or an authorised person. This value-added service comes at a nominal charge of ₹5 plus GST per item.
- Registration facility
An additional Registration feature allows address-specific delivery, providing an added layer of security. This service is also available at ₹5 plus GST per item.
- Real-time tracking and online services
The Speed Post ecosystem now includes:
- Online booking
- SMS-based delivery alerts
- Real-time tracking
- Digital payment options
These upgrades are part of India Post’s ongoing digital transformation journey.
Special discounts announced
