New Delhi: The Delhi Police has registered a First Information Report (FIR) following a complaint by the chief security officer of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), officials said.

The FIR, dated October 11, 2026, was registered at Vasant Kunj North police station under Sections 75, 75(1)(i), 75(1)(iv) and 79 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The name of Congress Lok Sabha MP and former JNU professor Angomcha Bimol Akoijam features in the FIR, according to its details.

Police said further investigation into the matter was under way.

The development comes amid a political row over allegations of sexual harassment involving Akoijam, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) targeting the Congress leadership over its alleged silence on the issue.

On Sunday, BJP MP Bansuri Swaraj accused the Congress of hypocrisy on women's safety and empowerment, questioning the silence of party leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Sonia Gandhi.

Addressing a press conference at the BJP headquarters, Swaraj described the allegations as "bone-chilling" and cited media reports alleging that Akoijam had asked sexually inappropriate questions to female students during assessments and engaged in unwelcome physical contact with them.

She also referred to allegations that the MP had called female students to his residence late at night for academic assessments, citing a viva examination that allegedly continued until 11.40 pm. Swaraj further claimed that allegations of sexually explicit conduct in the classroom had emerged.

“These are extremely serious and grave allegations,” she said.

Targeting Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Swaraj questioned whether the Congress's call to “smash the patriarchy” was merely political rhetoric.

“Through this incident, Congress's hypocrisy is coming to the fore. For the Congress party, feminism merely begins with a hashtag and ends right at the threshold of accountability,” she said.

Swaraj also questioned why the Congress's top leadership had not publicly responded to the allegations, which she said had surfaced in May.

“From October 9 until now, the top leadership of the Congress party, that is, Rahul Gandhi himself, has maintained silence; Kharge has said nothing; Priyanka Gandhi-ji has said nothing; honourable Sonia Gandhi too has said nothing,” she said.

Challenging Rahul Gandhi to act on the matter, Swaraj said the Congress should stand with the 11 female students and take action against Akoijam.

The allegations against Akoijam remain allegations, and the police investigation is ongoing.
