New Delhi: A Delhi Police team on Tuesday attempted to take SFI Delhi Secretary and former JNU Students’ Union president Aishe Ghosh into custody from AKG Bhavan, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) headquarters in New Delhi, leading to a confrontation between police personnel and party leaders.

The police action was reportedly linked to a case registered in 2021. According to reports, officers arrived at the CPM office to take action against Ghosh in connection with the old case, which is currently under legal proceedings.

The move triggered protests from CPM leaders and SFI members present at the location. Party leaders, including MP John Brittas, reached the spot and questioned the police action.

Police team leaves after protest

Following objections from CPM leaders and workers, the situation turned tense at AKG Bhavan. Leaders argued with police officials and sought clarification over the procedure being followed.

CPM leaders said they would cooperate with legal proceedings and assured that Aishe Ghosh would appear before authorities if required. However, they objected to the attempt to take her into custody directly from the party office.

After the confrontation, the police team left the premises without taking Ghosh into custody.

CPM questions timing of police action

CPM leaders alleged that the police action was connected to Ghosh’s participation in a recent student protest at Jantar Mantar organised by the Kokroch Janata Party (CJP).

The party claimed that using an old case to take action against a student leader after her involvement in protests raised questions over the timing and intent of the move.

CPM leaders also questioned the presence of police personnel without visible uniforms or badges. They said one officer cited rain as the reason for not wearing uniforms, following which leaders asked them to return in proper attire.

Reports stated that the case involving Aishe Ghosh dates back to 2021 and is currently before the court. Questions remain over whether any fresh notice or court direction was issued regarding her appearance.

The Delhi Police has maintained that its action was related to legal proceedings in an existing case, while CPM leaders have demanded further clarification over the procedure followed.

The incident has added another point of confrontation between student groups, opposition parties and authorities amid ongoing debates over handling of student protests in the capital.
