New Delhi: The Supreme Court Collegium has decided to transfer Justice Yashwant Varma of the Delhi High Court to his parent Allahabad High Court following an adverse report against him. The recommendation for his transfer was made by the Collegium, headed by Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna, and has been forwarded to the Central Government for approval.

Justice Varma, who was elevated as a judge of the Delhi High Court in October 2021, has had a distinguished judicial career. His transfer comes amid reports of a large sum of unaccounted money being found at his official residence. The money was reportedly discovered after a fire broke out at his residence, during which Fire Department officials and police officers were assessing the extent of the damage.

The decision aligns with the Supreme Court Collegium’s policy of ensuring judicial accountability and maintaining institutional integrity. His move to the Allahabad High Court, where he originally served as a judge, is seen as a corrective measure following the Collegium’s assessment.

The transfer of High Court judges based on internal evaluations is a routine practice aimed at upholding judicial efficiency and fairness. The government’s response to the Collegium’s recommendation is now awaited.
