New Delhi: Tensions flared on Friday as BJP workers staged a massive protest near AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal's residence, accusing him of disrespecting the Purvanchali community. The demonstration was sparked by Kejriwal's recent remarks alleging large-scale voter fraud involving residents from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. The protest escalated quickly, leading to the deployment of water cannons to control the situation as BJP workers broke barricades and clashed with the police.
With the Delhi Assembly elections fast approaching, political parties are intensifying their efforts to consolidate their hold over key voter communities, particularly the Purvanchali population, which forms a major portion of the capital's electorate. The Purvanchali community, primarily comprising people from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Jharkhand, has become a focal point of the political battle between the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
The protest follows AAP's allegations of widespread voter fraud, with Kejriwal claiming that 5,500 votes were registered in just 22 days in the New Delhi constituency. He accused the BJP of orchestrating these irregularities to manipulate the upcoming elections. The BJP, in turn, vehemently denied the allegations, calling them baseless and politically motivated.
In response to Kejriwal's remarks, the BJP has labeled him as an "enemy of Purvanchal." The party released posters featuring this slogan and ramped up their rhetoric against the AAP government, accusing Kejriwal of insulting the Purvanchali community. BJP leaders, including Delhi BJP President Virendra Sachdeva and MP Manoj Tiwari, have been vocal in their criticism of Kejriwal, accusing him of disrespecting the people from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Jharkhand.
The protesters gathered outside Kejriwal's residence, chanting slogans and waving flags, demanding an apology from the Delhi Chief Minister. They claimed that Kejriwal’s comments were an insult to the hard-working people from Purvanchal who have contributed to the development of Delhi. The protesters also expressed their frustration with the AAP government, accusing it of neglecting the issues affecting their community.
The protest marked a dramatic escalation in the political battle ahead of the Delhi Assembly elections, scheduled for February 5. With just weeks left, both AAP and BJP are ramping up their campaigns, trading accusations, and vying for the support of Delhi's diverse electorate. The BJP, which secured only eight seats in the 2020 Delhi Assembly elections, is determined to make inroads into the capital’s political landscape, particularly by targeting the Purvanchali community.
The Delhi Police were on high alert during the protest and managed to disperse the demonstrators after the deployment of water cannons. However, the incident underscores the high stakes and rising tensions as the election date approaches. The BJP's Purvanchal Samman March is a clear indication of the party's strategy to consolidate support from this key demographic, while AAP is focused on countering the allegations and maintaining its grip on power in Delhi.
