New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Atishi has written a letter to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, accusing the BJP-led central government of settling a "large number" of illegal migrant Rohingya refugees across Delhi without informing the Delhi government. Atishi referred to two tweets from Union Minister Hardeep Puri, which she claims reveal the settlement has been ongoing for several years.
In her letter, dated December 15, Atishi demanded that the central government provide a complete list of Rohingyas settled in Delhi, along with their addresses. She also requested that no further rehabilitation of Rohingyas occur in Delhi without consulting the Delhi government and its residents.
CM Atishi criticises the BJP government for ignoring Delhi residents’ concerns
Atishi expressed concern over the distress caused to Delhi residents, claiming that the settlement of these refugees would lead to law-and-order issues, job loss, and strain the city’s already limited resources. She stated, “Through this letter, I wish to convey the anguish of Delhi's people over this step taken by the BJP government. These migrants could not only pose law-and-order challenges but also deprive Delhiites of jobs and further stretch the city's already limited resources.”
Atishi also criticised the BJP-led government for diverting the rights and facilities meant for Delhi’s underprivileged to migrants. She emphasised that this is a situation that the people of Delhi will not tolerate.
Questions over border security and illegal migration
In her letter, Atishi also questioned the BJP-led government's failure to secure India’s borders, asking how these migrants were able to cross the Indo-Bangladesh border without hindrance.
“How did these immigrants cross the Indo-Bangladesh border? A recent report by a prominent TV channel revealed that thousands cross this border daily without hindrance. This demonstrates the BJP government's complete failure to safeguard our borders,” she said.
The Delhi Chief Minister further demanded that the central government provide a complete list of Rohingyas relocated to Delhi and that no future settlements take place in the city without consulting the Delhi government and its residents.
She also criticised the BJP-appointed Lieutenant Governor for instructing Delhi Police to conduct a door-to-door survey to identify these refugees. Atishi concluded her letter by reiterating her demand for transparency and accountability in the relocation of refugees to Delhi.
