Chennai: The Congress on Wednesday formally announced its full support to the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) and its leader Vijay in forming the next government in Tamil Nadu, following the party’s strong debut in the state assembly elections.

In a letter signed by Tamil Nadu Congress in-charge Girish Chodankar, the party said the electorate had delivered a “very clear, strong and overwhelming” mandate in favour of TVK. It confirmed that both the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee and the Congress Legislative Party (CLP) had resolved to back Vijay’s party in forming the government.

However, the Congress made it clear that its support would hinge on TVK maintaining a secular alliance. The party stated that its backing would continue only so long as TVK keeps out “communal forces” that do not adhere to the Constitution of India.

The Congress also framed the alliance as one rooted in the legacy of past social and political leaders, saying it would aim to revive Kamaraj’s governance ideals, uphold Periyar’s social justice principles, and remain committed to B. R. Ambedkar’s constitutional vision.

The agreement, the party added, extends beyond immediate government formation. It is intended to continue into future elections, including local body polls as well as Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha contests, based on “mutual respect, appropriate share, and shared responsibility”.

In the current Assembly elections, TVK has secured 108 seats in the 234-member House, falling short of the 118 required for a majority. The party is therefore expected to seek support from smaller parties, including the Congress and Left allies, to bridge the gap.

Despite the Congress’ offer, uncertainties remain. TVK may still explore other options, including a potential alignment with the AIADMK, which holds a larger number of seats. The Congress’ longstanding association with the DMK is also seen as a complicating factor in negotiations.
