Veteran Congress leader and five-time Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Sultanpur Majra, Jai Kishan, died of cardiac arrest at his residence in Delhi on Thursday. He was 66. The Congress party confirmed his passing and described it as a significant loss, particularly for its Dalit leadership in the capital.

Jai Kishan was widely regarded as one of the most prominent Dalit leaders in the Delhi Congress. He served the Sultanpur Majra constituency with distinction across five terms and remained an active figure in the party until his death. Though he contested the 2025 Delhi Assembly elections from the same seat earlier this year, he did not succeed in returning to the House.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge paid tribute to the veteran leader, stating that his death was an "irreparable loss" for the party. “As a dedicated Congress worker, he served the people and contributed to the empowerment of the underprivileged sections of society,” Kharge wrote on X, extending condolences to Jai Kishan’s family and supporters.

Congress general secretary (organisation) K C Venugopal also expressed sorrow, remembering Jai Kishan as a committed leader who rose from a marginalised background to become a senior public representative. “He served the public and the party with immense dedication for many years, and left an indelible mark on the lives he touched,” Venugopal said in a statement on behalf of the Congress family.

Delhi Congress president Devender Yadav said, “May God give peace to the departed soul and strength to the bereaved family to bear this sorrow.”

Throughout his political career, Jai Kishan held various organisational roles, including AICC secretary and vice president of the Delhi Congress unit. His contributions to the party and to the empowerment of Dalit communities in Delhi are remembered with great respect by colleagues and constituents alike.
