Kozhikode: Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) will now take over the coordination of the network that connects the computers in the country's post offices. The company is responsible for managing the operation of around 50,000 computer networks under the Postal Directorate.
Although the contract with BSNL was officially set to begin on November 1, the actual work will start on December 1. For the past decade, network operations for the Department of Posts (DoP) were managed by the private networking company Sify. Following the end of the contract with Sify on October 31, responsibility for the network was transferred to BSNL. However, Sify was given an additional month to resolve any issues arising from the transfer.
While India has a total of 1,54,965 post offices, the network is connected to around 50,000 post offices which include Head Post Offices and Sub Post Offices. BSNL has taken responsibility for the network up to the installation of the routers, while Sify is handling any system-related issues during the transfer. As a result, there are concerns that some challenges may arise in the initial phase of the network transfer, potentially affecting post office operations.
