New Delhi: In connection with the Bhima Koregaon violence case, Keralite activist and Jesuit Church priest Fr Stan Swamy was arrested by the National Investigation Agency (NIA). 83-year-old Swamy was arrested from Ranchi, the NIA officials informed. Swamy had denied the allegations levelled against him.

Protests keep arising from different sectors of the society against the arrest of Stan Swamy. Many other eminent personalities and human right activists has been imprisoned for about 2 years in connection with the Bhima Koregaon case.

Writer Ramachandra Guha said that Stan Swamy is a person who dedicated his life for the welfare and rights of tribal people. The Modi-led government is trying to silence and suppress them because they value the profit of mining companies rather than the livelihood of tribal people, Guha added.

Stan Swamy is suffering from many physical ailments. He is the oldest person to be arrested in connection with the case. He was interrogated by the probe agency many times regarding the case. A Keralite, Stan Swamy has been working for the welfare of tribal people in Jharkhand for over five decades.
