Bengaluru: Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara on Monday announced a probe into the lapses at Bengaluru Central Jail following the emergence of videos allegedly showing inmates using mobile phones and enjoying other unauthorised privileges inside the prison.

A committee has been constituted under Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) R Hitendra to investigate the matter. The panel also includes Inspector General of Police Sandeep Patil and Superintendents of Police Amaranath Reddy and C B Rishyanth. Deputy Commissioners and Superintendents of Police from districts with major prisons will serve as co-members of the committee.

Addressing reporters after a high-level meeting with senior officers, Parameshwara said Bengaluru Prison Chief Superintendent K Suresh has been transferred, while Superintendent Imamsab Myageri and Assistant Superintendent Ashok Bhajantri have been suspended.

The minister further stated that an IPS officer will henceforth oversee the Parappana Agrahara Jail and announced plans to establish a central command centre in Bengaluru to monitor CCTV feeds from the jail.

Meanwhile, the BJP staged a protest over the lapses at the prison, with party leaders detained as they attempted to march toward Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s residence to register their protest.
