Assam CM inaugurates new Rs 4,000-crore Guwahati airport terminal, boosting connectivity and passenger capacity.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated the new terminal building at Lokpriya Gopinath Bardoloi International Airport which will be operational from February 22. The Rs 4,000-crore Integrated Terminal-2 building was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on December 20 last year.
Sharing the update on social media platform X, Sarma said the airport’s transformation reflects the state’s development journey. “From an open space to a world-class gateway in just a few years. This transformation reflects a clear vision for a more connected and confident Assam,” Sarma wrote.
He added that the airport, inaugurated by the Prime Minister, will officially open its doors to passengers from February 22.
The new terminal has been built at a cost of Rs 4,000 crore and covers an area of around 1,40,000 square metres. It has been designed to handle 13.1 million passengers per year, significantly increasing the airport’s capacity.
Officials said both domestic and international flights are expected to start operating from the new terminal by March. Once the transition is complete, the existing terminal building will be converted into a dedicated cargo hub, which is expected to strengthen the airport’s logistics operations.
According to officials, the design of the new terminal draws inspiration from Assam’s rich biodiversity and cultural heritage. The structure reflects local art and architecture, aiming to give passengers a strong sense of place as soon as they arrive.
The airport is named after Gopinath Bardoloi, Assam’s first Chief Minister. During the inauguration ceremony in December, Prime Minister Modi also unveiled an 80-foot statue of Bardoloi outside the terminal building.
The opening of the new terminal is expected to improve passenger experience and strengthen connectivity for Assam and the Northeast region. With increased capacity and modern facilities, the airport is likely to support tourism, trade and business growth in the state.
The new terminal marks a major milestone in Assam’s infrastructure development and is seen as a step towards making Guwahati a stronger aviation hub in the region.
