Rampurhat: Former West Bengal Assembly Deputy Speaker and ex-Trinamool Congress MLA Asish Banerjee was found hanging at a TMC party office in Birbhum district on Sunday morning, police sources said.
The party office is located near Banerjee's residence in Rampurhat. A purported suicide note was also recovered from the premises, according to police sources.
TMC leader Abbas Hossain said party workers received information about Banerjee's death at around 7:15 am.
"We were shocked to hear this. It is a very sad incident," Hossain said, adding that it appeared to be a case of suicide, though the exact circumstances would become clear only after the post-mortem examination.
"Why he did it, only God knows," Hossain said.
Banerjee's body has been sent for post-mortem examination. Police are yet to ascertain the exact circumstances surrounding his death.
The recovery of the purported note is part of the ongoing investigation, while further details are awaited.
