Delhi-based content creator Amir Shokeen has apologised after a viral video allegedly showing him making racially derogatory remarks against a youth from Tripura triggered widespread outrage. Shokeen has claimed the video was scripted and intended as humour, but police action is underway, with Tripura Police registering an FIR and Delhi Police investigating the matter.

In an apology video posted on Facebook, Shokeen expressed regret for hurting the sentiments of people from Tripura and said he had not intended to insult anyone. He also claimed that he knew the young man featured in the video and that the interaction was meant to be humorous content.

The controversy escalated after the video circulated widely on social media, drawing condemnation from political leaders and organisations across the Northeast.

Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju condemned the alleged remarks and warned that the accused would face action.

In a post on X, Rijiju said the Delhi and Tripura police would teach Shokeen a “hard lesson”. He also criticised people who tolerate such behaviour, saying they contribute to the spread of hatred.

Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha directed the state's Director General of Police to coordinate with Delhi Police over the case. Leaders across party lines have also called for action against the content creator.

The Delhi Police's Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operations (IFSO) unit is investigating the viral video following a request from the Special Police Unit for North Eastern Region (SPUNER).

Police personnel had visited Shokeen's residence but did not find him there, according to a senior police officer. Tripura Police has registered an FIR in connection with the incident, and a police team is expected to travel to Delhi to pursue the investigation in coordination with Delhi Police.

The Tripura Students Forum Delhi has also submitted a complaint seeking an impartial investigation, preservation of digital evidence and registration of an FIR wherever warranted by the facts and applicable law.

The investigation is ongoing.
