Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh government has come under heavy fire from the Allahabad High Court for failing to provide compensation to the relatives of those killed in the January 29, 2025, Mahakumbh stampede.

The vacation bench of Justices Saumitra Dayal Singh and Sandeep Jain declared the government's stance to be "unstable" and "indifferent to the suffering of residents" during their hearing of a case on Saturday. Uday Pratap Singh had submitted a plea, to which the courts were replying.

The state administration was requested by the court to provide comprehensive information about the fatalities, injured individuals, and medical personnel who treated the stampede victims. Additionally, it mandated that the government explain the measures taken to recompense the relatives of the victims.

About the stampede: As thousands of pilgrims fought for room to take a sacred bath on the occasion of Mauni Amavasya, a stampede broke out at the Sangam section of the Maha Kumbh early on January 29, 2025, resulting in multiple deaths.

Following the stampede, the victims and their relatives of the deceased received condolences from President Droupadi Murmu, Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, numerous Union Ministers, a number of Chief Ministers, and opposition leaders from various parties.
