Air India is in early-stage discussions with Boeing to acquire approximately 10 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, reports Reuters. These jets were initially intended for Chinese airlines but were rejected due to ongoing trade tensions between the United States and China. The trade war has led to reciprocal tariffs exceeding 100%, prompting Boeing to seek alternative buyers for these aircraft. ​ 

The acquisition is expected to bolster Air India's budget carrier, Air India Express, which currently operates a fleet of over 100 aircraft. If finalized, these planes could be integrated into the fleet by the end of the year, potentially accelerating the airline's expansion plans. ​ 

This move is not unprecedented for Air India Express, which has previously accepted 'white tail' aircraft, jets originally manufactured for other customers. However, differences in aircraft configurations between the intended Chinese clients and Air India's requirements may influence pricing and integration strategies. ​ 

The acquisition aligns with Air India's broader strategy to enhance its domestic and international network, addressing the growing demand for air travel in India. The airline's expansion efforts have faced challenges due to delays in aircraft deliveries from both Boeing and Airbus.
