Bengaluru: The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has imposed a fine of ₹102 crore on Kannada film actror Ranya Rao in connection with a gold smuggling case, DRI sources reported on Tuesday.

In addition to Rao, the DRI has imposed penalties of ₹63 crore on hotelier Tarun Kondaraju and ₹56 crore each on jewellers Sahil Sakaria Jain and Bharat Kumar Jain.

On Tuesday, DRI officials visited Bengaluru Central Jail and served each of the accused a 250-page notice, accompanied by a 2,500-page annexure.

“"It was a herculean exercise to prepare a detailed notice along with supporting documents. Today we served 11,000 pages of documents to the accused,” a DRI source told PTI.

According to DRI sources, the actor was caught with 14.8 kg of gold on March 3 at Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru, upon her arrival from Dubai.

Rao is the step-daughter of K Ramachandra Rao, a senior officer with the rank of Director General of Police.

Earlier this year, in July, Rao was sentenced to one year of imprisonment under the stringent Conservation of Foreign Exchange and Prevention of Smuggling Activities Act (COFEPOSA) in relation to the gold smuggling case.

The COFEPOSA-related matter was brought before the High Court on Tuesday, which has scheduled the next hearing for September 11, according to DRI sources.
