Puducherry: Thaaragai Aarathana, an 11-year-old Bharatanatyam dancer trained in diving, performed a full classical dance sequence underwater while wearing traditional attire, including jewellery and makeup. The performance was aimed at spreading awareness about the dangers of plastic waste to marine life.

A video of the underwater performance, shared on Instagram by Shubham Bhardwaj on December 23, 2025, quickly went viral. The post described Aarathana as a young dancer who turned classical art into a message for ocean conservation.

Instead of performing on land, Aarathana descended nearly 20 feet underwater and relied entirely on movement and expressions to convey her message. The video shows her executing Bharatanatyam poses beneath the waves, drawing attention to plastic pollution in marine environments.

Social media users responded positively to the video, praising the young dancer’s effort, discipline and environmental message. Several users highlighted the difficulty of performing underwater while holding one’s breath and maintaining precise dance movements.

The video has garnered around 24,000 views along with numerous comments since it was shared.
