The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the alleged sexual abuse of minor girls by granite baron R Veeramani has registered another case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act after the mother of a minor girl approached the investigators.

The fresh case was registered on Monday after the girl's mother appeared before the SIT on September 28 and submitted a complaint, Chennai city police said. An investigation into the complaint has now been launched.

The development comes as the SIT continues its wider probe into the allegations against Veeramani and others. The all-women team was formed on the directions of Tamil Nadu Director General of Police Mahesh Kumar Aggarwal to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the POCSO case.

Chennai Police has appealed to anyone with information, documents or other evidence connected to the case to come forward and share it with the investigators.

Police said the identity and details of those providing information would be kept strictly confidential. Legal action will be initiated after the information is verified, the police said.

The case has also drawn the attention of the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR), which has taken suo motu cognisance of allegations that minor girls aged between 12 and 16 were sexually abused by Veeramani. The child rights body said its fact-finding team will visit Chennai to conduct an on-ground inquiry.

The SIT is functioning under the supervision of Chennai Commissioner of Police A Amalraj.

Veeramani, who is accused of sexually abusing minor girls, is currently in judicial custody. A POCSO court on Friday extended his remand until October 9. He has been in custody since August 29, and his earlier remand period was scheduled to end on Friday.

Veeramani and three others have been arrested in connection with the case, which has triggered widespread concern across Tamil Nadu. Political parties and civil society groups have called for stringent punishment for those found responsible.

The investigation has also raised questions over the alleged police inaction following a complaint made in November 2024. In the wake of the allegations, the government removed two senior IPS officers, including then Chennai Police Commissioner A Arun, from their posts and placed them on compulsory wait.

With the SIT now receiving another complaint and the NCPCR preparing for an on-ground inquiry, the investigation into the allegations against Veeramani is continuing on multiple fronts.
