Kozhikode: A doctor practising in Kozhikode City has filed a complaint alleging that he was defrauded of Rs 4.08 crore by a Rajasthan native. 

Following his complaint, the Kozhikode Cyber Police have initiated an investigation into the case.

The 67-year-old doctor, originally from outside the state, was deceived by a man named Amith Jain, a native of Rajasthan. The accused reportedly earned the doctor’s trust by claiming they were from the same community and in need of help. 

The fraud began on January 31 this year, when the accused first contacted the doctor, alleging financial hardship due to unemployment from the Covid-19 pandemic and a pressing need for funds for his wife’s delivery at the hospital. He provided medical bills as proof and requested financial assistance. The doctor initially sent Rs 5,000 to a QR code provided by the accused and later sent an additional Rs 5,000 for post-delivery expenses.

The accused continued to fabricate various stories to extract more money. He falsely claimed that his sister was on the verge of suicide due to debt and provided a fake suicide note as evidence. He demanded Rs 24 lakh to settle all debts immediately.

By August 23, the total amount the doctor had transferred to the accused amounted to Rs 4,08,80,457. The doctor had to mortgage gold ornaments to pay the amount. The incident came to light when the doctor's son found documents relating to the loan. The Cyber Police are currently investigating the case to track down the perpetrator and recover the lost funds.
