Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Police have revealed that 30 out of the 63 murders reported in the state over the past two months were linked to substance abuse. 

Of the total murders, 50 took place within homes or were the result of arguments among friends. The police record shows that about 20% of the criminal activities in Kerala during this period are associated with substance abuse. The authorities have also observed an increasing demand for drugs in the state, with narcotics like ganja and other illegal substances being smuggled into Kerala from neighbouring states.

Between January 22 and March 1, the Kerala Police seized a significant quantity of illicit drugs, including 1.31 kg of MDMA and 153.56 kg of cannabis. In addition to these, the police also confiscated a range of other illegal substances, such as brown sugar, heroin, hashish oil, and various types of narcotic tablets. 

The police arrested 2,854 persons, examined 17,246 people, and filed 2,762 cases during this period.

Both urban and rural areas are witnessing a growing demand for drugs. Manoj Abraham, Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order), emphasised the need for greater awareness and vigilance among parents to combat the rising drug menace. 

“Parents must be more conscious and proactive in raising awareness about the dangers of substance abuse,” he said.
