Bahraich, UP: In a disturbing case of familial violence, a man and his wife have been arrested in Uttar Pradesh’s Bahraich district for allegedly murdering their 22-year-old nephew after reportedly finding him in an "objectionable condition" with a girl from their family. The police announced the arrest on Friday, nearly two weeks after the incident.
The victim, identified as Bhanu Pratap alias Sudhir, was a resident of Aurahi village and had been visiting his maternal uncle, Chetram Gautam, in Dharmanpur village. His body was discovered on March 29 in a sack near a school on the outskirts of the village, with a rope tied around his neck. The grisly discovery prompted immediate suspicion of foul play.
According to Additional Superintendent of Police (Rural) Durga Prasad Tiwari, the breakthrough came after a multi-pronged investigation that included CCTV analysis, examination of mobile phone records, call detail scrutiny, and interviews with witnesses. The evidence pointed toward Chetram and his wife, Sundari Devi, who were subsequently taken into custody.
Police say the couple confessed during interrogation, admitting they killed Bhanu after catching him in a compromising situation with a girl from their household. They allegedly strangled him, placed the body in a sack, tied a rope around his neck to make the death appear suspicious, and transported the remains on a motorcycle before dumping it near a government school.
ASP Tiwari confirmed that a post-mortem examination had been conducted as part of the investigation. Following their confession and arrest, the couple was sent to jail on Thursday.
Bhanu’s father had previously filed a complaint, accusing Chetram and his family of involvement in the murder. Authorities say the investigation has now confirmed his suspicions.
The case has sent shockwaves through the local community, highlighting the dangers of unresolved domestic tensions and extreme responses to perceived dishonour. Police officials have assured that further legal action will follow in accordance with the investigation's findings.
